TAM used to be one of the biggest companies back in Yugoslavia, employing about 8.000 people. The bus and truck manufacturer had a state-of-the-art technology and a vast export market: the Balkans, Russia, Middle East and Africa. After the country fell apart, so did the company. The machines and the know-how stayed put though and were recently purchased by a foreign investor. I was commissioned by the new owner to redesign the old logo.
The old logo, designed in the fifties, had remained unchanged for about forty years. With an integrated star, reminiscence of a different era, it was more than ready for a make-over.
The main challenge was choosing the right typography for the new, longer name of the company. Since the logo consists of three circles and is visually very strong, the type had to balance it out. This balance was achieved with defining a rhythm within those same circles.
This redesign was not fully implemented.
