Before returning to Ljubljana from Lapland, I made a small detour and visited my brothers in Geneva. We had a brothers-sister reunion and I felt my holidays really started. After spending too much time up north I found it really difficult to adjust myself to the more southern type of life. Rediscovering that people do a lot of small talk even if you just order a croissant in a big supermarket was once again a true revelation. Hello warm south!!! I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t insist of visiting at least one exhibition. We saw Voici un dessin Suisse, 2 decades of Swiss drawings. Below is the drawing by Genêt Mayor.

Midnight sun film festival

I’ve been wanting to go there for ages and this year my dream finally came true. Although it was not all about movies (but also about mosquitoes and inappropriate camping equipment for the ‘finnish summer weather’), our time there was very enjoyable and I am looking forward to see the festival again some other year. Suleiman’s film The time that remains was truly touching in revealing how absurd a war can be and I loved its photography.

Love-been there, done that

I had an exhibition opening in Myymälä2 together with my friends and schoolmates Tirza Ben Porat, Minna Mäkipää, Jukka Peltosaari and Ben Dromey. Our topic was Love! Opening night was really nice, a lot of friends showed up. The exhibition is open until 13.6., WELCOME!! This is my roommate Tekla, hugging the balloon.

Media lab Demo day

For the past month I’ve been working on my first art project – with A LOT of help from media lab Ben Dromey. The CityBeat installation is translating sound and transforming it into heartbeat pulse. We are currently trying to get the permission from the Helsinki Central railway station to record the sounds in the main hall and translate those to our beating balloon. The idea is to hug the balloon and feel your city. This work will be exhibited in the Helsinki gallery Myymälä 2 on the 1st of June. We had our first presentation on Media lab’s Demo day, the pictures are from there. The balloon was dressed by Tine Kozjak.

The swap

For a duration of three days, six students from HSE and Taik participated in a social experiment — SWA!P. We exchanged lives by swapping apartments, lessons, friends and hangouts. This experiment explores the differences in lifestyle of art and business students. We hope to find out if the environment we are in create who we are today, or perhaps we created the environment due to our very nature. I became Laura, a business student and followed her daily routine. Fun!

Andreu Balius workshop

In January we had a workshop with Andreu Balius from Typerepublic. It was intensive work and fun at the same time. I started to work on this type, I wanted it to have big contrasts between thin and thick lines. Drawing these thin lines in Fontlab was a real pain, I’m still recovering:)

Anette Lenz poster workshop

We had a really good workshop with a German designer Anette Lenz. Our topic was the New Year’s wish for Helsinki. The first assignment was collecting photos of different places that reflect certain emotions (respectful, profound, encouraging … ) We had to share moments in our life when we were unexpectedly and positively touched by something and also write a paragraph about what Helsinki means to us. Posters came out of these stories and places. It was really great to get to know Anette!

Slavoj Žižek

A slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek (his picture is taken form his website) gave a lecture in Kiasma today, titeled Cinema and ideology: report from battleground. He talked about ideology – he described it as an invisible background noise that is never spoken about, but is rather everything that stays between the lines and compared it to consciously codified scenes from famous Holywood movies (Casablanca had quite a leading role in his talk). He was provocative, interesting, funny and gave us a lot to think about. After the lecture there was a screening of his movie in three parts Perverts guide to cinema. I sure won’t look at David Lynch’s movies the same way as I used to anymore:)

Vandalizing Taik

This week we had an interesting ‘poster’ workshop with the Image-shift guys. It all started with questions about politics and ended with a bunch of very personal problems that we all share as graphic designers. These were then glued all over Taik.

My work will be shown in the 4th Biennial of Slovene Visual Communication, Brumen. Nouvelle is also used in the catalog for the yearly exhibition of Academy of art and design in Ljubljana.
